This all started years ago when I moved back to Austin (home sweet home) from New York City, and I wanted to lure all my friends here for a visit. I felt like a travel guide! I compiled all sorts of packets for each person—offering great restaurants to some friends and sending club listings to others. Nowdays, there’s a lot more information on the web, but I still like the idea of finding just the best recommendations, without pages and pages of info to read through. And now, with the magic of the Internet, it’s easy to share.

So, here are my favorite activities. I’ve also linked my “weekend ideas” packet. It actually plans out your guests’ days (or your days if you are the guest!)

If you think I’ve missed something or are insulted in any way by my recommendations, you can shoot me an email at Oh, and a special thanks to the folks at the downtown Radisson Hotel & Suites Austin Town Lake for funding this great project! May it bring you happy visitors and general good things.

The Radisson Hotel & Suites Austin will give you an AWESOME deal if you use this code: COOL. Plus, that way I get credit for sending you there!!!

  • Congress Street Bridge, the hot spot for the world famous Austin Bats (watch their flight each night, weather permitting)
  • Town Lake Hike and Bike Trail (miles and miles of beautiful trail winding through parks, downtown, and alongside the lake.)
  • 6th Street! (miles of clubs and bars)
  • Trendy Warehouse District (I don’t usually use the word trendy, but whenever I see a list, they always say “Trendy Warehouse District.” Basically, it’s clubs and restaurants for those who like to have fun and are beyond college years.)
  • Lotsa’ lakes: Town Lake, Lake Austin, Lake Travis
  • The Texas State Capitol and state building complex
  • The Texas State Governor's Mansion
  • University of Texas
(sometimes I get visitors, then convince them to look for a job and stay!)
